CTD

These CTDs from Sea-Bird Electronics (SBE) use modular sensors and are pumped with SBE 5 pump(s). Data are normally collected and processed with Sea-Bird's Seasoft software.

SBE 911+ High quality ducted/pumped system with digiquartz pressure sensor and dual temperature and conductivity sensors. 6800 meter capability and data rate of 24 scans per second.

SBE 25 Sealogger Ducted/pumped system with internal data recording or data "up the wire". 6800 meter capability and selectable data rate up to 8 scans per second.

Hydrographic equipment

CTD frames with water sampling carosels SBE model 32
Niskin bottles and water samplers
Salinometers

ADCP

The transducers are mounted at 5 meters (nominal) depth. Ship's position is provided by GPS, ship's heading is provided by the ship's steering gyro compass as well as Magellan ADU5 and Ashtech ADU2 attitude determining GPS systems.

Data are normally collected with the UHDAS acquisition system which allows simultaneous operation of both ADCPs. Initial processing and browser based real-time data displays are provided.

See the final report for the comparison between the 150kHz narrow bandwidth ADCP and the 75kHz Ocean Surveyor which took place on the ENDEAVOR in February 2001.

MOCNESS

B.E.S.S. 1 m2 Multiple Opening Closing Environmental Sampling System (MOCNESS)
The MOCNESS is an instrumented biological sampling system with multiple opening and closing nets that allows investigators to collect samples at discrete depths. A variety of sensors and nets can be used with the MOCNESS. The MOCNESS has a separate day rate and a marine technician will be provided to operate the system if needed. Standard net mesh sizes are 150, 202 and 333 microns.

This system can be requested on other UNOLS vessels and must be scheduled well in advance of a cruise.

Available sensors:

ScanFish

GMI ScanFish (Mk II) is a towed, undulating wing incorporating a pumped and ducted SBE911+ CTD. It provides continuous along track sampling as deep as 180 meters at speeds up to 10 knots. The Sea-Bird SBE11 deck unit 9600 baud communication link is enabled.

Available sensors:

Underway, along track data

Routine logging and display of navigation, meteorology and sea surface data. Real time distribution via serial RS-232 and TCP/IP.
Logging is done with NOAA's SCS (Scientific Computer System) program at intervals or 10 seconds or less.

XBT

Sippican hand and mounted launchers with MK21/USB Recording System. Compatible with Lockheed Martin Sippican XBT, XSV, and XCTD probes.

Note: XBT probes are always supplied by the investigator.

Bathymetry

A Knudsen 320 BR dual frequency echosounder and a Knudsen 3260 chirp echosounder are standard equipment on the vessel. In addition to a real time display, data can be output to an EPC graphics recorder and disk file. Real time water depths are available via serial RS-232 interface or UDP broadcast in NMEA0183 format.
